I am honestly not feeling that patriotic this year for what are likely fairly obvious reasons. However, the period of early summer surrounding July 4th has become a sort of accidental commemoration of new beginnings for me. I moved to California exactly 10 years ago, I began working at my current day job exactly six years ago, and I asked Ginger Carden—my favorite person in the world, and in my eyes the most beautiful—to be my girlfriend just barely more than ten years ago.
This year, just a few weeks ago, I asked her to marry me. I am very happy to tell you that she said yes.
For whatever reason, good things just tend to happen to me this time of year. So I am celebrating that today, rather than the birth of our very flawed nation.
